It’s Your Choice
The Casino Connection Choice Awards
The preferences of casino employees and executives are not that much different than the other residents of South Jersey, but at Casino Connection, we believe they have a better insight than others. That’s because, in most cases, they are surrounded daily by the sophistication and elegance of the casino properties, and therefore have a higher standard. That’s why we believe the Casino Connection Choice Awards are one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon any business.
Casino Connection readers have been voting for their favorites over the past four months, and the results, while not surprising, emphasize what they believe to be the finest and most responsive businesses in the area. Here are the top “Choices” of Casino Connection readers.
BEST RESTAURANT: Angelo’s Fairmount Tavern, Atlantic City
The Old World charm and tradition of Ducktown’s historic restaurant is complemented by some of the finest fare in town. The hospitality of owner Sonny Mancuso makes everyone feel like they are around the family dinner table.
BEST CASINO RESTAURANT: Sonsie, Atlantic City
OK, technically, it’s not in a casino, but you can walk through Caesars to get to the Pier where Sonsie is the first restaurant across the Boardwalk bridge. From breakfast to dinner, Sonsie is extraordinary, and reflects its Boston origins.
BEST PIZZA PLACE: Mack & Mancos, Ocean City
During the summer, it seems like there’s a Mack & Mancos on every block of the Ocean City boardwalk. There are only three, but they are packed with pizza fans from noon to night. During the winter, get your Mack & Mancos fix on 9th Street.
BEST BAR & LOUNGE: Maloney’s Uptown Tavern, Atlantic City
Patrons mourned when Maloney’s in Margate closed to make room for those luxury condos, but the fun atmosphere, great food and special service have been transplanted to Tennessee Avenue. So flashback to your youth with a visit to the new location.
BEST CASINO BAR: The House of Blues Foundation Room at the Showboat
Yes, you have to be a member or know one to get into the Foundation Room, but it’s worth it. The comfortable setting, private rooms and unbeatable view make this facility the best in town. And some of your membership fee goes to charity.
BEST LATE NIGHT SPOT: Tony’s Baltimore Grill, Atlantic City
Another blast from the past. Anyone who grew up in Atlantic City or spent their formative years here knows that the night is never over until you make the last stop at Tony’s. Comfort food and a great jukebox make this an Atlantic City tradition.
BEST MALL SHOPPING: Atlantic City Outlets: The Walk
In what once was a retail-starved area, the South Jersey region now has world-class stores in several areas. But it’s the Walk that has turned everyone’s head. Now on its third expansion, the Walk has proven to be a hit for both local and visiting shoppers.
BEST CLOTHING STORES: Brooks Brothers
With two stores in Atlantic City—in the Walk and the Quarter—the classic styles at Brooks Brothers are perfect for the casino executive, both men and women. And the understated elegance of the brand’s casual wear demonstrates serious sophistication.
BEST HOSPITAL/DOCTOR: Atlantic City Medical Center/AtlantiCare
It’s no surprise that readers chose this impressive group of medical centers and services. With a mainland and city division, Atlantic City Medical Center has become the state of the art in medical care, especially when it comes to preventive medicine and its cutting-edge AtlantiCare program.
BEST SPA/SALON: Spa Toccare at the Borgata
The new Atlantic City has a wealth of great spas, but for our readers, Spa Toccare at the Borgata is at the top. The lush surroundings allow your cares to melt away. But just wait until the Water Club opens next year, and the Borgata introduces the next generation of Atlantic City spas.
BEST GOLF COURSE: Blue Heron Pines
There are some great golf courses in South Jersey, but the clear favorite among casino employees is Blue Heron Pines. With a new layout, the course offers a challenging experience in a mature setting. And don’t miss the specials for casino workers during the fall and spring.
BEST SLOT MACHINE: Wheel of Fortune
It seems Atlantic City employees are no different than any other casino customer across the country. The clear favorite slot machine is Wheel of Fortune, which has become a casino mainstay. And this year, players will be able to enjoy several versions of the “community-style” games.
BEST PLACE TO GAMBLE: The Borgata
Although it is now more than three years old, Atlantic City’s newest casino remains the favorite place to gamble for AC employees. With a full range of non-gaming amenities, the Borgata attracts gamblers, concert-goers, foodies and sightseers alike.
BEST WEEKEND GETAWAY: The Poconos/Wildwood (TIE)
Weekends, for Atlantic City casino workers, can fall on any day of the week. And that’s what makes a tie in this category so fulfilling. Because while both of these destinations are usually packed on the weekend during the appropriate season, both Wildwood and the Poconos have plenty of space in the summer and the winter, respectively.

Interview with Jay Snowden, General Manager, Showboat Atlantic City
This week, the Global Gaming Business Podcast features an interview with Jay Snowden, senior vice president and general manager with Showboat Casino-Hotel, on the developments at his casino in Atlantic City. Three years ago, the Showboat opened a House of Blues outlet, with all the amenities associated with that brand in other locations. While the HOB has distinguished Showboat from other casinos, it has only recently begun to work the way Harrah’s executives though it should. Snowden, the general manager of the Showboat, came to the property with one mandate: make it work! His role cannot be understated as the HOB begins its first full year under Showboat management. He spoke with Global Gaming Business Publisher Roger Gros at his office in the Showboat in December.
