James "Sonny" McCullough was appointed District 2 state senator in February, following the resignation of William Gormley, who had held the seat for more than 20 years. McCullough was the choice of several Republican politicians, but had to defeat Assemblyman Frank Blee to gain the seat. He has been mayor of Egg Harbor Township for 18 of the last 22 years. With EHT being the largest township in Atlantic County, he recognized the threat of overdevelopment imposed by the Pinelands Commission and has spent many years opposing its regulations.

First elected to the City Council of Atlantic City, Jim Whelan forged a progressive
reputation that propelled him to the mayor’s office in 1990. As the first mayor of Atlantic City in the casino era who wasn’t indicted, Whelan was able to move the city forward and help attract casino development. Defeated by Lorenzo Langford in 2001, Whelan returned to his job as a teacher until he was elected to the state Assembly in 2006. He now seeks the seat vacated by former Senator Bill Gormley, who was Whelan’s ally in many of the developments that started under his
mayoral administration.
